Purification of wilderness waters is necessary for anyone who ventures into backcountry areas for more than several hours a day, and can not carry sufficient water with from home. This includes backpackers, mountaineers, backcountry hunters and fishermen, cross-country skiers, trekkers, etc.

This book discusses the range of protozoa, bacteria, and viruses found in wilderness waters and the various methods for dealing with these, such as boiling, microfiltration, disinfection, or some combination used in popular water filters or water bottles.

David Cooney, PhD, was Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Univ. of Wyoming. An avid canyon-country hiker, cross-country skier, and mountaineer, he hiked and climbed extensively in Colorado, Wyoming, Mexico, the Alps, and Norway.

He is also the author of Activated Charcoal in Medical Applications
